[out] is a Twine that follows an unnamed protagonist in a narrative written to evoke the process and turmoil of "coming out" and the horrible damage that keeping secrets about yourself and your experiences can cause. The surreal narrative takes players through a variety of strange and sometimes horrific locations and situations as they seek to answer a question that is posed at the outset of the game: Are you sure?
[out] began development in 2012 as a 2D platformer that explored the stages and turmoil of coming out, but did not get far past the concept art/level design phase. Due to time constraints (Zach was attending college and working in the food-service industry, both full-time) and inexperience, the game was abandoned for nearly a year. After finally getting "the itch" back, Zach rewrote the game from the ground up as a Twine. The game was written in conjunction with the soundtrack by Neutrino Effect- as new tracks were written and finished, the narrative was pushed in slightly different directions. The completion of [out] marked the first finished game from Zach and [bracket]games.
